Pet Loss/Grieving Tips & Suggestions
PET LOSS & GRIEVING
TIPS & SUGGESTIONS
One of the most difficult journeys we have to go through in life is confronting a loss. There are many types of losses: a physical move, change of job or career, breakup of a relationship or marriage, our children growing up and moving out of the house. All can result in some form or degree of anguish and distress. But this article is dealing with a particular loss, that of a pet, our loyal friend and companion.
A very important part of grieving is resting, affording your self positive time away. I realize that you will think of your pet, more often than not, especially if the event has been recent. You will run into people, places and things, referred to as “triggers”, that remind you of your friend. Listed below are some tips and suggestions that can help you process the journey, level out the bumps along the way and achieve acceptance.
1. Get the proper rest you need so you’ll be able to better deal with the issues. Rest will help you think more clearly, allow you more energy and give you the ability to focus on the issues necessary for acceptance. The Pet Loss & Grieving CD I’ve created is expressly for that purpose.
2. Join a support group that deals with pet loss. You can find listings on the internet, through your veterinarian or in the yellow pages.
3. Volunteer your time and efforts helping someone else in need.
4. Rid yourself of guilt constantly living in the, “what ifs”. We have all made mistakes but I am sure that you did the best you could for your friend. Repeat to yourself three times in succession, I did the best I could with what I had to work with at that moment”. When you retire at night visualize (pretend to see) your friend and talk to him/her, tell them what you need to-I truly believe they will hear you and accept any apology you believe has to be made. Then let it go.
5. Develop an artistic skill you may have, join a bridge club or other social organization. GET INVOLVED.
