Immediate Steps You Can Take to Improve Your Relationship
“Remember we all stumble, every one of us. That’s why it is a comfort to go hand-in-hand.” —Emily Kimbrough
Pretend you have a good relationship. I know you may be saying to yourself “are you nuts?” The answer is “no.” Begin pretending now. The saying “fake it till you make it” reaps many rewards.
Set a common goal. Agree on at least one goal to work on as a couple. This could be raising the children, buying a house or starting a business. Accomplish something together as a team.
Build on the positives. We seem to take a negative issue and make it into a mountain. Reverse this habit. Take a positive and build it to mountainous proportions.
Have fun. Are you and your spouse in a rut—go to work, come home, go to bed, get up, go to work and on and on? Do something fun together. It doesn’t have to be expensive. I hear over and over, “we don’t have the money.” Pack up a picnic of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches and go to a park. It’s not Las Vegas entertainment, but it’s better than staying home and moping.
Respect and encourage each other’s individuality. It’s
important that both partners feel they have something special
to contribute to the relationship. When you validate your partner’s
uniqueness, you set the stage for a more satisfying outcome for
both of you.
