Useful Definitions
“Whatever causes a problem is a problem.” —Father Joseph Martin
Triggers - People, places or things that tempt
a person to use, such as hanging out with using friends.
Blackout - A period of amnesia where a person is functioning but has no memory of the experience. It is not a loss of consciousness.
Tolerance - The tendency to need more and more of a particular substance to attain the feeling you want to achieve. Paradoxically, this reverses in the latter stages of addiction. After a certain point, the liver becomes so damaged that ever smaller amounts are needed to get high.
Enabling - Taking responsibility for another person, making it possible for them to continue their addiction. For example, calling and telling the boss your spouse has the flu when in reality they’re hungover or high.
Denial - A defensive mechanism that
allows a person to not take responsibility for their actions.
It can take many forms such
as diversion, rationalization, intellectualization, minimization
or simple denial.
The addicted person attempts to place blame everywhere but
on themselves.
